[Visiting Thailand] Is it safe to go to Thailand now?

Of course it's still safe to be in Thailand now. Despite what you'll see on the US State Department website, the country is still very safe and you probably won't even notice anything different.

From a posting on FlyerTalk:

If we hadn't received emails and pages that the coup occurred, we wouldn't have known it happened. There were some military troop transport vehicles around and soliders with machine guns--they were courteous, friendly, and helpful. At no time did we ever feel threatened. The people of Thailand are fiercely supportive of their King and fully support the coup. I wouldn't anticipate any problems. Our Firm's office in Bangkok opened the office as usual this morning at 8am and we had no problems on the trip from the hotel to the airport or at the airport (although we had received unconfirmed reports from some FINNAIR pilots around 3am that airspace might be temporarily closed and flights canceled).

So enjoy cheap fares and emptier hotels and go now!
