Trains from Colombo to Ella depart from Colombo Fort train station and arrive at Ella train station in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country.

There are two departures per day: one in the morning and one at night. The travel time on trains from Colombo to Ella ranges from 8h46m to 10h11m, and can be longer if there are delays.

There are three classes of seats on trains from Colombo to Ella. First class seats are in an observation carriage. Passengers sit backwards to see the views. The carriage gets booked weeks in advance in busy periods, so book ahead.

You can get train tickets at Colombo Fort station. You will need them to enter the platforms. Trains get crowded, so try to arrive early to get a seat on the train if you’re not traveling in the first class observation car.

Tickets for trains from Colombo to Ella are 640 Rs for first class, 350 Rs for second, and 190 Rs for third class.
